Cooking over the fire

Cooking over the fire

We had a great time camping and cooking over the fire. Arne was the star when he figured out how to wrap some canned biscuits around a stick and roast them. Then, he also put some of my biscuits in a pot and placed them in a fire to cook almost as if they were in an oven. What a delicious flavor. Of course, my mistake was to not bring enough biscuits for everyone to have one. I thought surely all of the adults would share with the children…I should have known better!

More hiking make the Muir Woods Redwoods even more fun. Hugo loved walking all the way inside of the trunks of the trees. They were huge!

Thanks for all this fun!

SUN DOG FARM POTLUCK

SUN DOG FARM POTLUCK

Being invited to a farm potluck doesn’t always mean a lovely weekend in the mountains, but this time it did. Peter and I went to Brasstown Valley Resort for the weekend, with a special dinner planned on Saturday evening. It was a special time together for us.

Our good friends Lauren and Luca are members of an organization for young farmers, and they invited us to attend the organization’s potluck supper at Sun Dog Farm just over the Georgia line in North Carolina. Darby and Elliot, the owners of the farm, have worked hard to revitalize the farm, which had been used to plant the same one crop for many years. You could tell it was now well tended.

Chef Terry Koval from the Wrecking Bar in Little 5 Points in Atlanta roasted a pig and added a tomato dish to the potluck! Delicious! We have recently learned that he is highlighted in Decatur’s Farm Burger Restaurant’s picture in Lexicon of Sustainability founder Douglas Gayeton’s new book Local. We’re proud of you, Chef Terry! Bravo!

The people, the farm and the food were all delightful. Thanks for the invitation, Lauren and Luca!

Saturday's exhibit at the Freedom Farmers Market near the Jimmy Carter Center in Atlanta went very well, with 300 visitors attending. There was a lot of interest in the Lexicon of Sustainability images and people asking questions. A special visitor who came by was Chef Terry Koval, now from the Wrecking Bar, whose picture was in Douglas Gayeton's new book Local

One couple was asking about local examples being represented, and fortunately Peter had let me hold Douglas Gayeton’s book Local at that time, so I was able to show them. They seemed very appreciative of the information and the Lexicon fan, so that they could remember to go look at the website and get even more information! Another young lady, Kenan, was very interested, as she has a blog about eating healthier and about painting. She has been trying to find a way to incorporate her two passions. Also, Atlanta Eats came by and interviewed Peter for a TV video that will show in the fall. It was an exciting day at the Freedom Farmers Market!

I had a very captive audience – both the shoppers and the vendors.  Being at this market was not like “preaching to the choir”, but “preaching to the people who want to be part of the choir”! It was wonderful, and I made many wonderful connections.  Everybody was very happy to take a schedule and a fan.  I have no doubt that many of them will investigate where shows are and attend them.

I have been going to Café 45 South in Norcross, GA, on Saturday mornings for a bagel for years now. I put up the easels and waited – but I did not have to wait long.  One woman viewed all the images and then took pictures of them to send to her daughter, who is in school in Florida. Most of the folks who came in were interested in the images and wanted to learn more.   With every schedule I gave away, I was sure to point out all the web sites available.  I noticed a few people texted their friends about the Lexicon. Sometimes, visitors came up because the images themselves are so good – but then they started reading about them, and a whole new world opened up!

Today was a great experience.  Yes, the Lexicon is about sustainability. But, in my mind, it is also about connections…the connections we have with Mother Earth and the food she provides us.  But, it is also about the connections we build with each other that will help us sustain the Earth and each other.
