Terra Madre Day 4&5

We have been tasting, but now we are eating whole meals that are part of the Terra Madre program. The chefs are outdoing themselves, and we are enjoying their dishes!

Enzo and Lisa joined us at the festival, and that made it even that much more fun. Our dinner was one of the Eat Ins that was called “From Head to Tail,” and among the dishes that were made, almost every part of an animal’s body was included…just use your imagination for those details! It was most interesting, and there were lots of people there that we knew. Another great fun day at Terra Madre/Salone del Gusto!

Thanks for joining us, Enzo and Lisa!

Terra Madre 3rd Day!

This party has turned into a party that’s all about solidifying old friendships and making new ones. We have run into many of the students that were in Peter’s class at the University and some of the people from Georgia that we will enjoy visiting when our Italian students come for a tour of the Southeast in November. It’s so good to see everyone.

Peter and I led a few tours to some of our favorite producers that are at the Terra Madre. The people on the tours really enjoyed going with us, and they enjoyed meeting the producers of black bee honey, sausage, cheese, prociutto, black bread, and olive oil. More great fun was had by all.

We wish all of you could experience Terra Madre and Salone Del Gusto. It’s quite a large event, but it’s worth it when you get to see so many people and products from so many countries!

Ciao! Ciao!

SUNDAY SUPPER/STUDENT TOUR MTG/ TERRA MADRE OPENING CEREMONIES

IT. Journal

SUNDAY SUPPERS RULE!

There are more pictures of this Sunday Supper with actual participants that will come later. For now, just know we had a wonderful time reuniting with great friends as if we just saw them yesterday! What a delightful time! Sunday Suppers RULE!!!

STUDENT TOUR MEETING

Peter and I are helping to conduct a tour for 9 Italian students at his University of Gastronomic Sciences in Bra and their adult leader Francesco, a dear friend of ours. We had our first meeting with some of the group, and it was simply delightful. They are very excited about the itinerary and asked fantastic questions, indicating they were looking forward to an in depth visit into the Southeast USA in November!

WELCOME TO OPENING CEREMONIES OF TERRA MADRE/SALONE DEL GUSTO

Finally! We have arrived in Turin, and Terra Madre/Salone del Gusto are in full swing. What a party!!!

As usual, the most impressive thing about the opening ceremonies was the Parade of Slow Food Nations! It’s hard to see in these pictures, but there was a constant parade of international representatives who proudly carried their national flags to be displayed at the front of the theater. The announcer introduced a country name about every 5 seconds, and the parade lasted more than 20 minutes. It was so heart-warming to see so many nations come together for the central purpose of  addressing the need for “good, clean and fair food for all!”

The next day, the 5 buildings (each football field size or more) began their march through the festival with beautiful displays and indescribably delicious tasting experiences. It’s hard to remember in that environment that suitcases that are over the allowed weight limit are very expensive to get back home. We regularly see Terra Madre participants with large pockets on their clothing, loaded with wonderful wares. Care must be given that food coming back into the States should be packed correctly, though.

The crowds will continue to grow until Saturday, when we will spend most of our time trying to get from one place to another.
Ciao! Colleen

Dinner with Mara and Valerio

Dinner with Mara and Valerio

It’s very interesting how a small idea can turn into a big plan, all in one night. I knew that Valerio and Mara only had one day each week off, so I suggested that we get together on Monday night, and Mara turned it into a lovely invitation to dinner in their wonderful home. Monica was with me when they invited us, and Mara wanted to include Monica in the invitation. Then, a few days later, I received an email from Mara saying that Ricardo, Lella and their twin daughters, all of whom were present the last time we were invited by Mara and Valerio to have supper in their home, asked if they could join us. What another great idea!

Our delicious 4-course meal made a perfect venue for speaking English and Italian, getting caught up with each other and…this is very important…planning for the twins and Giovani to visit Monica and us in Atlanta next Summer!!! What a delightful idea. Plus, Giovani thought it would be fun to have his good friend Philipe to come along, so now there are 4. Monica and I stopped by the Pasta shop the next day, and Mara verified that all 4 of the young people were very excited about this adventure. We’re excited about their visit, too.

Then it occurred to me that there was really no reason to leave out Valerio, Mara and Alberto, so I put some pressure on Valerio to think about a trip to Atlanta for all of them some time soon. How’s that for more good news!?

Thank you so very much, Mara and Valerio for sharing your home, wonderful meal, family and friends with us! You are truly dear friends. We’re looking forward to hosting you and all of the young people! Oh, please bring with you Ricardo and Lella!

A presto!

AN AUTHENTIC ROMANIAN DINNER!

What a treat to be invited into the home of our Romanian friends to a real, authentic Romanian dinner. Lucia (pronounced beautifully “loo CHEE ah”) and her husband Pop introduced us first to their precious 2 year old daughter Serena, who was surely not very serene, but she was a happy, lively, delightful 2 year old. It was such fun to get to know her. She finally crashed and went to bed at 9pm, which is her normal bedtime. Her mother and father are terrific parents. You can tell by the way they all interact.

Our meal was a true Romanian cultural experience. First, we had a plate of sausages that were a wonderful beginning to our meal. Afterwards, we continued with a scrumptious soup, Lucia explained that most Romanian dinners include soup. In the history of their country, hard times necessitated the prudent use of the food that they had. So, if they could get a chicken, the first step would be to cook the chicken and use the liquid as the broth for the soup. Nothing was wasted! In the soup, were whole carrots and onions, with tiny fettucine noodles. It was superb!

Next, we had a veal ragu with pollenta that was as delicious as anything I have ever tasted. That was followed by a cake that had an unusually delicious flavor to it. I will ask Lucia about the recipe. This cake was topped with gelato and some fruit…a perfect ending to a perfect meal. We had a tasty Romanian wine to go with the meal. The whole thing was outstanding.

After dinner, we watched a short video that talked about all the important discoveries in history that were initiated by Romanians, including insulin and computers! What an important part they played in the history of our world!!! Very interesting!

Thank you so much, Lucia, Pop and Serena! Your hospitality and wonderful meal made us feel very proud of Romania and very close to all of you!

We hope to see you again soon!

A VISIT WITH GIANNI AND ELLA’S FAMILY

When Peter and I arrived at Enzo and Lisa’s house this afternoon, we found Alice, Lisa’s daughter, “asleep” under the outdoor porch…”asleep” with her eyes closed, her earplugs in her ears and attached to her phone, and she was grooving to some music. She thought it was a little less than funny when she discovered that I had taken her picture in that situation.

We all enjoyed a short visit under their gazebo, then we walked up the hill to visit Alice’s grandparents, Gianni and Ella. Gianni is making great improvement in his health, even though he is still in a wheel chair most of the time. He has a goal of walking much better by Christmas. Everyone is cheering him on! We can tell he’s better because he has piles of books in his sitting room that he is using as research to write his next book. He is a prolific writing. All of the history of this area of Italy has been documented in his books! Gianni’s wife Ella is doing well and is beautiful, as usual. I can’t say enough about how good her apple tart was today, too. I could eat that yummy pastry every day and be very happy!

Many of their family came by to visit while we were there. Our Monica was there with Eletra, who is home for the weekend from her new university in Genoa. Eletra’s twin sisters Demi and Becky were pleased to greet Alice, and all four of the cousins were happy to be together and welcome Monica into their sisterhood.

It was such fun to spend this quality time with so much of their family. Thank you all for such a pleasant afternoon together. Save me some of that apple tart, Ella. Wow! That was so very delicious!

Much love to all,

Opening Arpino!

After a full day of Bra-isms, we had a short, but fantastic, visit with our Francesco and Sara before we met Enzo and Lisa at the grand opening of Arpino, the bar down the street that our dear friend Marco, whom we met at Bar Chiavassa, is now managing. It was full, and people were happy out in the street. We were proud of the work that Marco has done to make this place welcoming and fun for all. Our wonderful former neighbors Bianca and Nora wandered by, and we made plans with them to get together while we are here. We also particularly enjoyed our visit with Enzo and Lisa, too, since Lisa has been in Milan all week. Great fun to reconnect with all those friends!

Love to all,

1st Days in Bra

1st Days in Bra

Bra is as we left it… plenty of great gelato, and lovely friends that we haven’t seen in too long!

Lisa has left to go to Milan for work, and we decided it was our responsibility to take care of Enzo until Lisa returns on Friday night. So, since he had already had lunch, he came with us to Bar Chiavassa, and we talked and talked while Peter and I ate our favorite lunch salad there. As we were finishing, I looked out the window only to find our Monica with her friends the twins walking by. I called to Monica, and they came in to welcome us to Bra. The twins are Lisa and Enzo’s nieces, and Monica has been eating most of her meals with their family while she is staying in Bra with their grandparents Ella and Gionni. What a nice surprise. Monica and I met for affogatto later in the day to start our vacation in Bra in style.

After a quick stop at our favorite pasta shop to say hello to Valerio (You should have seen his surprised eyes when we walked in his shop!), we continued our care of Enzo in the evening by joining him for a delicious meal that he made for us at his house…all the goodies that I love from Enzo’s kitchen! Monica joined us for that meal, which was very nice.

Monica took me for a traditional walk to the Big Store Thursday morning to leave Peter’s shirts to be laundered and to buy some supplies for later. We again stopped by our pasta shop, and Mara was there with Valerio. We talked a long time and arranged a dinner at their house on Monday night, their night off from pasta making. That will be such fun! As we travelled on to the Big Store, we were gravely disappointed to realize that my favorite gelato shop was closed, but we will look for more gelato later!

I heard from her later in the day that she and Rosella, the twins’ mother, wanted me to join them for a walk along the river. It was so very good to see Rosella and get caught up with her family and all that they have been doing.

In the evening, we took Enzo for yet another fabulous meal, this time at Il Fiore Restaurant, where our friend Gregoire is owner. We were also treated there when our Italian tutor Sara came by, and Francesco and his girlfriend Sara met us to say hello. So good to run into great friends in Bra.

Peter’s spending lots of time working on the details of the Italian Students’ Stage with us in Atlanta in November. He and Francesco are working hard to make it really special for the students.

More later, Ciao!

La Traversina!

Our favorite bed and breakfast, La Traversina, is wonderful, as always. There’s just this one very small detail! On our first night here, torrential rains started, and by the time they stopped near the end of our 2nd day, there were mudslides that blocked every exit road from La Traversina and broke some of the pavement off one of the exit roads. Now, in the middle of our 3rd day here, front loaders have come by to partially clear the areas that were only mudslides, and there is great hope that we may actually drive carefully through the scraped mud on the roads to freedom on our way to Bra tomorrow.

The situation has reminded me of the ice storms in Georgia when I was a child…no electricity, no leaving the house, survive on whatever is in the freezer and cabinets to eat or drink, and spend your time with whoever is in the house doing whatever you want to do. In our case, there have been 13 guests that have laughed through most of this “problem,” together with the owners Rosanna and Domenico, and along with their son and his wife, Veejay and Sumjana, only to realize that we have enjoyed our time at La Traversina very much! As I used to say when the ice storm desperate situation ended…”Aw, shucks!”

Maybe you all didn’t plan this “adventura,” but we are all certainly making the best of it! Che bella!

Ah, Camogli!

Ah, Camogli!

Our time spent in Camogli went by all too fast! Gina and Giordano welcomed us into their home that rested 300 yards high up on the steep side of a mountain, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea…and Camogli! Pepino the 1-year-old castaway dog and the cats also gave us a warm welcome.

The weather was not stellar. The warm winds from Africa met the cooler air to make torrential rains. We heard about creeks turning into rivers, beaches being covered over entirely by the sea, bottom floors of tall houses being washed away, schools being damaged and some children killed because the teachers herded them to the basement to misunderstood “safety,” roads closed to any traffic, landslides and washed out bridges.

We discovered that Gina and Giordano’s house, isolated (1/4 mile walk down 400 steps from the nearest road) and overlooking the Mediterranean, was a perfect setting to reconnect with good friends, eat and drink to our hearts’ content, find our beds easily and have a relaxing weekend. The skies settled somewhat on Saturday afternoon, and we walked the ½ mile to Nonna Nina’s Restaurant for an absolutely delightful dinner there at one of our favorite restaurants in this area.

Gina and Giordano, we enjoyed our visit with you soooooo much! Hope to see you again soon!

Lots of pictures this time, but I have a feeling that I know who will enjoy them the most.

The Cheese Festival was spectacular. We like cheese, so we were in cheese heaven. This festival was held in the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and I was fascinated by the growing sculptures that were all around us. Even the sculptures of people were made with potatoes for facial cheeks, etc. We had such a good time. It made me think that the Botanical Gardens would definitely be added to our list of  “must go” places when company comes to spend some time with us in the Atlanta area.

I saw a video of someone making one of these sculptures, and they were planting individual plants all over these huge forms. Amazing!!! You could tell where the gardener turned into the artist.

Enjoy,

Fifty people enjoyed the Lexicon of Sustainability images, the panel discussion about sustainability, the terrific local snacks and the delicious Laloo’s goat’s milk ice cream at the Cobb County Centennial Sierra Club meeting in Marietta, GA, last Thursday.

It was inspiring to watch people listen to the panel discussion among university leaders in the area. The audience also joined in a lively discussion, with questions and comments about the topic of sustainability. I knew it was time for me to stand up and talk about Slow Food Atlanta and the Lexicon of Sustainability images when one of the people in the audience asked, “How are we supposed to talk about sustainability intelligently when we aren’t all using the same definitions for the various aspects of sustainability?”

It was a perfect venue for the Lexicon images to be displayed. Thank you, Sierra Club, for welcoming us into your meeting about sustainability! We felt right at home.

A Morning Playing with Sebastian

How much fun can 3 little boys have? When Sebastian met Hugo and HC, they all knew immediately that they would be great friends. Everybody liked to be outside or playing together inside. Everybody was game to do new things and meet new people. Our two grandsons had a super morning with their new friend Sebastian! The pictures tell the whole story!

This idea came up when we needed a pack ‘n play for Hugo. Peter went next door to ask Patricia if she knew anyone who had one. Before we all knew it, we had borrowed her pack ‘n play and she had free babysitting while she needed to work on her 2 papers that were due in the classes she is taking. I hope we can spend lots more time with Sebastian while Hugo and Harldur are here! We like having him around, and his mom studies best when he is having fun next door.

Thanks, Patricia! We consider it a perfect deal all around! That’s what makes good neighbors, right?

GSU class with Lexicon

US Journal
Georgia State University Ag Geography Class
September 9, 2014

Dr. Fleming’s Agricultural Geography class in Atlanta, Georgia’s GSU - Georgia State University - made an excellent venue for sharing ideas about sustainability with college students. The 16 students in the class took time to study the images, discuss the topics, ask questions, debate the answers to those questions and hear speakers share a deeper knowledge of some of those topics, Non-GMO, in particular.

Speakers can never match the level of instruction that the Lexicon of Sustainability Pop Up Show gives to a classroom of college students, and a combination of the 2 is just magical. Dr. Fleming's Agricultural Geography class at GSU in Atlanta was a great example of that impact! What a beautiful day we all had.

Thanks to all of you!

Freedom Farmers Market is one of the absolute favorite farmers markets in Atlanta. There are lots of people who have come to that same conclusion, because in good weather this market is teeming with visitors listening to musicians, standing in line for their favorite foods and conversing with farmers and shop keepers who have become friends through these weekly conversations at this market.

The Lexicon of Sustainability images fit perfectly in this shady market just outside the Carter Center in Atlanta. People wanted to know what they were all about, and several even knew that these were different images than we brought the last time they were at this market.

It is always special to get some time with our long time friends, who have moved to Knoxville, but this time was especially wonderful because they hadn’t been to our new house before. Emory U. Farmers Market

The market at Emory University was bustling.  Vendors were setting up their stalls. Students were walking nearby…some lost on the first day of classes. Freshmen were timidly walking through, tempting their nose with the smells of freshly popped kettle corn.  Luckily, we secured a position next to the most popular booth at the market for our Pop Up Show.  I learned that this neighbor sold the best quiche, pies, cookies and cakes, with flavors as wild as hibiscus pound cake.  He said, “You don’t like ginger until you’ve tried my ginger cookie.”  People were lined up to see him, saying they hoped he would be at the market; and they first noticed the Lexicon images while they were standing in that line. I saw a variety of faces, ages, bikers, dog walkers and the occasional faculty member stopping in for lunch at the Farmers Market.  They all seemed amazed at the Lexicon of Sustainability Show, some pointed out places on images where they had visited or people that they know. It was especially satisfying to me to hear their personal comments when they related so well to the information and the photographs. It was quite the destination.

Douglas' Visit to Georgia

Douglas’ Visit to Georgia!
September 3-6, 2014

It was almost like having royalty in Atlanta to have Douglas Gayeton visit us this weekend! Everybody knew about his being a Co-Founder and Creator of the Lexicon of Sustainability. They were thrilled to know that he also had a new book that has been published recently. Local: The New Face of Food and Farming in America not only incorporates many of his Pop Up images, but it adds so many intriguing and informational stories, details, recipes and explanations about the many topics of sustainability. Everyone who asked him to sign his/her copy of the book was fascinated with it!

On Thursday, we spent the day with Douglas at Serenbe in Chattahoochee, Georgia, a small sustainable community just south of Atlanta. Founder Steve Nygren proudly showed us around the gorgeous property, highlighting the importance that community and sustainability have in this town. It was delightful to watch Steve and Douglas banter about sustainability issues, as well as many other important and urgent needs in the food and farming arena. A side trip to taste some fabulous cheese at nearby Many Fold Farms was a perfect addition to a wonderful day in that area. Later, we had a beautiful lunch at The Hil Restaurant back in Serenbe.

Friday evening found us at the Wrecking Bar Brewpub’s famous Marianna Event Center, where award winning Chef Terry Koval delighted us with delectable appetizers. Douglas, and friends Rashid and Robin, enlightened the group of 100 people by presenting pictures and interesting talks about each person’s life path in sustainability endeavors. Of course, our Lexicon of Sustainability Pop Up Show gave everyone a compelling introduction to these topics, too, with trained docents available to answer questions. Douglas signing his new book added splendor to the evening, and dinner at the downstairs restaurant at the Wrecking Bar after the event was delicious and the perfect ending to this perfect evening!

To complete his Atlanta visit, Douglas went with us to the Carter Center’s Freedom Farmers Market, where he took a host of pictures, signed more books and enjoyed conversations with the public. In addition, we had many people who stopped to study and reflect upon the wonderful Lexicon images. Some of the viewers asked if they might schedule a Pop Up Show at their university, school or business event. Others shared their amazement at the depth of information found in these artworks; and naturally, the children were spellbound with these imaginative images. Trained docents helped to make this event run smoothly, with all visitors being able to engage in conversations and ask questions.

Please come back to Georgia again soon, Douglas! Our Atlanta community was honored by your visit!

The creek is almost finished. The guys have worked hard on it, and their most fun thing to do is to duck their head under the waterfall, and show me their “straight hair!”

The day they decided that making funny faces was very entertaining! They were very creative, don’t you think?

I was amazed to find a gorgeous snail embedded in the concrete wall at one of the parks where the boys played while we waited for Arne to finish work. I’m sure it will be the new mascot for Slow Food!

Thanks again for a wonderful visit in Oakland!
