Gelato!!!

What a peaceful day at home, after having 20 people for dinner last night. After straightening up the kitchen and washing a few loads of laundry, I decided that I would see if the BigStore (the only store that is open on Mondays) might have summer shirts for Peter. His dry cleaned shirts are too hot for the weather. The temperature is in the 80’s, but the humidity is often near 75%. I’m up to 3 showers a day. Anyway, the 4-mile round trip walk to the BigStore was great exercise, but the shirts for Peter were all too small. Rats! I still took the opportunity to get some milk and yogurt, and I couldn’t resist stopping to…take a picture of the big gelato sign (see picture) in front of my favorite gelato shop. I think I may have had a taste of the straciatelli and nociolla gelato as I went by, too. Yum!

When Peter returned from school, he asked if I wanted to go with him to Bar Boglionni, across the street, at 7 tonight to meet with some of the students in their class and the former student who was there as the professor of the day. Ian and Amanda were lovely folks, but the bar was closed (Monday!), so we just invited the group to come on into our apartment for some pizza and beer. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Ian and hearing about his work as a documentary maker. If I had closed my eyes, I would have thought I was listening to Arne! We had a great time, and Wild Dan, Maia San Francisco,, Felix (friend of Dan’s), Shona, Charlotte, Theo, and some others showed up before the night ended at 11:40!!

A Date to Boccondivino

This morning, Peter decided to play hookey and try to get caught up on 3 papers that are due. That sounds strange, I know, but sometimes the students are not graded on the material of some of the professors. As it turned out, Ian’s class is one of those. He thoroughly enjoyed the class Ian did yesterday, though.

We had a date for lunch at the restaurant Boccondivino, the first Slow Food restaurant ever(see picture of the Slow Food logo). We ate out in the courtyard under an umbrella, and it was lovely.  We shared a meal of caprese, spaghetti with Bolognese sauce, and a most interesting 2nd piatti – cold and pickled fried egg, zucchini and fried chicken! Yes, all 3 of those items had been covered in vinegar and sitting in the refrigerator overnight. Very unusual, but tasty! We won’t tell Monica, but I ordered affogato for dessert there, and I really enjoyed it. Maybe there is decent affogato outside of Caffe Vittorio!

This afternoon, I enjoyed a surprise visit from Lisa’s sister Rossella. We’re trying to arrange a visit to see Anna again with the family next week. We’ll see if it works out. Rosella also wanted to ask me about “my” class I taught in the States about being financially secure. I laughed, and I showed her Dave Ramsey’s information on line. She asked me to teach her teachers about it. We’ll see where that goes.

Hope all is well with all of you,
Colleen
