KONNY AND THE HUNTERS

Italy Journal
Sunday, March 10, 2013

Another sunshiny day started with an 8:15am call from Sarah (student in Peter’s cohort), “Peter, I’m up and ready to go to the BigStore to get my suitcase whenever you are ready to take me!” Needless to say, Peter’s response was, “The BigStore opens at 10. Be here at10 til. I’m sleeping until then.” Sarah responded, “Awesome!” I was surprised that she found the exact same suitcase that I got there for 20 euros, but she had to pay 36. She was “bummed” about that. My huge ORANGE suitcase will no doubt watch for yours as we both travel around, Sarah!

Konny and the Hunters

It’s hard for me to describe the event that we attended this evening. Konny (short for Constantine) has been trying to arrange for us to join a meal with some friends who are hunters and own a field and game store across the street from Grimaldi’s Pasta Shop. That’s another whole story to be told another time, but this plan finally came to fruition this evening.

Peter and I went to Konny and David’s apartment early enough to watch Chef Konny’s preparation of the fresh wild rabbit and red deer that the hunter brothers Andrea and Carlo had recently gotten on a hunting expedition with Konny. It was amazing to see him at work. I love eating Konny’s food. It’s always special and delicious.

When he was finished, they put all the dishes in a large plastic crate, and Konny and David carried it down the street to Andrea’s house, where we ate…and ate…and ate! We brought some wine, and other salads and desserts were also added to make this fantastic meal. Andrea and Silvia’s twin boys, Giovani and Filipo (Dec. 6, 2011 birthdays - exactly the same age as our Hugo) were just as cute and sweet as they could be. Carlo and Paola’s children Anna and Lorenzo are teenagers, and they enjoyed watching and playing with their little cousins while the adults ate. Everyone spoke some mixture of Italian and English, which made communication very easy and fun. We had the most delightful time. Thank you, Konny, for arranging this magical evening for us, and please thank the hunters and their families (and precious hunting dogs) for opening their house, table and hearts to us.

Baci a tutti!

Colleen
