VISITING CHEF DAVIDE SCABIN AT MENSA

Italy Journal

Mensa with Chef #1 DAVID SCABIN from Torino

We were so pleased that Emanuel asked us to meet him at the Mensa (also called Academic Table) today for lunch. The place was all spruced up, with new tables and chairs. The serving line was working well, too. David Szantos (the professor who attended our dinner last night) was there, and we invited him to join us, too.

The student chefs were on the sideline today because the first professional chef Davide Scabin from Combal Zero in Turin was there with his crew of 8 (!) to cook the student meals for the week. Notice the picture of Maya and Jacqueline just “hanging out.” They said it was harder to stay out of the way than it would have been to try to help, but there were plenty of helpers that the chef had brought from Torino.

Our meal consisted of half an onion filled with beautiful spaghetti, bread crusted guinea fowl on a smoking bed of herbs, French fries and chocolate gelato with small pieces of candy. It was a gorgeous, delicious and filling lunch.

Thank you, Emanuel, for inviting us to join you for lunch. As always, we enjoyed our time with you.

VICTORIA & KYLE'S DINNER

SATURDAY SUPPER IN HONOR OF KYLE AND VICTORIA’S VISIT

What fun!

We had 20 people who attended our dinner in honor of Kyle and Victoria’s visit, including some who were late because they had been on stage (week’s field trip) in Spain, and their flight back was cancelled. We did have a few added to the original list, too, but the number ended up 20. We were especially happy to have David Szantos join us. He is from Canada and now works for the University. He got a Master’s degree here, and he is the person to whom Peter was referred when he was trying to get into the program without a college degree. David was a tremendous help, and he explained to me that his discussions with Peter convinced him that the University could benefit as much as the students like Peter because of their contribution of varied expertise in a wide range of experiential backgrounds.  David was very impressed and pleased that the dinner was so inclusive and that the idea and commitment was initiated from Peter, not as a University function.

Peter had made a beef roast and had roasted some veggies. Those were added to contributions from all the rest. Daniel had his famous Asian beef soup and fudge he had gotten in Great Britain that was the Prince’s favorite. Ashley’s lovely green salad with pears and a wonderful fruity dressing and Theo’s beautiful stuffed cabbage leaves with or without tomato sauce were favorites. Enzo outdid himself with MY cheese spread AND Chocolate Caprese Torta with Maya’s pear sauce (thank you, as always, Enzo…and Maya). Chick pea bread, nougat candy with hazelnuts, sausage from Spain, an after dinner Maya Brazil drink, wines galore, a Maya Brazil dish of Robiola cheese topped with chopped Brazilian nuts with fruit sauce all around, plus all sorts of other incredibly yummy contributions made the dinner exceptional. Everything was absolutely delicious!

At one point in the evening, Kyle stood up, thanked everyone for coming and asked if anyone would share secret stories about his dad from this year…stories that his dad might not ever tell him. That set off a string of tales about Peter. It started with Peter following the bus in his car all over Bosnia when there was no GPS available. Theo eventually joined him in the car to get some sleep.

I particularly liked the story about Megan and Peter planking. Planking is when you get on top of a structure and lie flat face down with only your stomach touching. Arms are outstretched over your head, and your legs are stretched out toward the back. You look like a plank of lumber balancing on this precipice. Megan had been planking in many situations, and she had challenged Peter to plank on one of the truillo (simple mud houses) in Croatia. He took the challenge and did a great job with his first try at planking! Way to go, Peter! We’re all so proud of you!   J

The stories weren’t as secretive and juicy as Kyle had expected and hoped, but they were fun for everyone to tell and for Victoria and Kyle to hear.
As everyone left, there were comments about “When is our next Sunday Supper?” Peter and I had already been thinking about when that would happen.

It was delightful to see everybody together and to introduce Kyle and Victoria to so many of the neat people we have met while we were in Bra. Thanks for coming to Kyle and Victoria’s dinner, everyone. We loved having you here, and thanks for bringing your exquisite dishes!

And thank you, Victoria and Kyle, for coming to visit us and meeting some of the dear people we have learned to love this year!

A presto!

CasaMatilda, Finocchio Verde, and Apericheeso

CASAMATILDA WITH ANNA

The snow did not deter us from our visit to CasaMatilda today. We have always bought our CasaMatilda products (fruit juices, preserves, spreads, etc.) at the Dogliani artisan street market, but this time we wanted to show Victoria and Kyle  the farm. Anna met us at the shop and gave us a short tour of the facility, which includes B&B facilities for 14…lovely apartments. She told us the history of CasaMatilda and how she and her husband had made the decision to start this business because of their passion for growing things of the highest quality. We have always known the CasaMatilda products to be absolutely delicious!

We’ll see you again soon, Anna! We enjoyed our time with you.

FINOCCHIO VERDE WITH MARIO

For lunch, we wandered on through the hills to Finocchio Verde, where Mario and his staff have opened their B&B facilities for anyone who would like to help on the farm to stay free…. Mario is a cheese maker, again one who only provides the highest quality. He learned that taking care of his goats, sheep and now one donkey was a very lonely job, so this is the way he has added a social life to his work that he loves. We ate the exquisite 7-course meal that was provided there, and then Mario took us to see the animals in the barn. Eighty sheep and goats were having lots of fun getting their heads scratched and having their picture taken. Then, Mario opened the food bin, and the cacophony of noise that came from the animals was deafening. We laughed and laughed at those very well trained animals who knew well what that squeaky door meant!

Thank you, Mario, for a delightful meal and visit to your farm. We will definitely bring our tour groups to see your cheese making facility.

APERICHEESO AT GIOLITO’S WITH MARIA CHRISTINA

We were a little tired in the evening and realized that we almost planned too much for this day, but the Apericheeso at Giolito’s Cheese Shop would have been the last event we would have cancelled. We were glad we went with Maria Christina for the tour of the facility and cheese tastings…paired with wonderful wines, of course. As always, your food and hospitality were delightful! Thank you so very much!

Barolo and La Morra with K&V

Barolo and La Morra with Kyle and Victoria

The snow had turned to slush in Bra this morning, so it was easy to walk or drive around. As we took off for a tour at the Borgogno Vineyard in Barolo, though, the snow became much deeper. We enjoyed our time there with Kyle and Victoria, and the tour with Monica was very informative and interesting. She provided a couple of delicious tastings, too, which we always appreciate. It was especially fun to ride the elevator up to the rooftop, where the view of the valley all around was magnificent! It was cold up there, though, so we didn’t stay there long.

For lunch, we wandered on over to nearby La Morra and ate a delicious meal at More e Macine Restaurant. We found the herb planters on the front terrace covered by 15 inches of snow, and snowplows had been used there all morning. It could easily be a mess of frozen danger if the temperatures go below freezing over night, which is the prediction.

For today, though, we enjoyed the beautiful view of Monviso on the drive back home, satisfied from a lovely time at Borgogno and a wonderful meal together at More e Macine.

Aperitivo at Francesco and Jacqueline’s

Francesco and Jac invited all of us over for aperitivo this evening. Most of the FC8 (Peter’s cohort) students who are still in Bra came, and it was a great time to introduce Kyle and Victoria to Peter’s classmates. They started telling stories about the year and how sad they are about it ending in only 6 weeks. Most of the stories were very funny, and you could tell that they had all become very close! Thanks for a lovely time together, Jac and Francesco!

WELCOME, KYLE AND VICTORIA!

WELCOME, KYLE AND VICTORIA!

We were so glad to welcome Kyle and Victoria to our house in Bra this morning. Kyle has had a business meeting in Paris, and Victoria played around in Paris for 2 days while he was working. Then, this morning, they flew into Torino, and we picked them up at the airport.

The weather report showed snow most of the day, so we went directly back to Bra, and sure enough, the snow was consistent all day. By the evening, there were a couple of inches of slush on the sidewalks and streets. If this freezes tonight, we will have a hard time getting around tomorrow morning.

Kyle and Victoria were really hungry and tired from getting to the airport so early, and they were happy to have some food that Peter made and to take a long afternoon nap. Afterward, we went for a walk in the snow and got some pasta and carrots for supper from Grimaldi’s pasta shop and some Giolito cheeses to take to an aperitivo that Jac and Francesco have invited all of us to tomorrow evening. Sounds like fun.

After aperitivo with belinis, some of Enzo’s wonderful cheese spread and Pugliana bread, Peter made us a delicious pasta dinner made with  Emanuel’s French butter and Mara’s apple torta for dessert. Delicious!

Thanks for coming to visit us, Kyle and Victoria! We love having you here with us!

FIRST ACADEMIC TABLE

THE ACADEMIC TABLE!

Peter and I were pleased to be two of the very first to participate in the Academic Table university student cafeteria’s opening day. Our dear friends Maya, Jacqueline and Lapo are the 3 official student chefs for the university’s new student food program, and the meal was exquisite. There were only a few choices but enough to feed us well. We had risotto; 2 kinds of soup (lentil and cauliflower/leek); and slightly spiced cold, but cooked carrots. Everything was cooked really tastily, and we were happy and well-satisfied when we finished our meal.

Needless to say, we will definitely eat at your table often!

Bravi, tutti!

LA MORRA AND PRESEPE

Italy Journal
Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2012

We decided to take Jim and Joan to La Morra today, and Jim got some great pictures on the drive and the different overlooks. Then we went to More e Macine Restaurant for lunch. As you can see, a good time was had by all!

In the evening, the Russos Flavio and Nucci joined Jim and Joan and us for a visit to the Nativity scene that Flavio and their niece exhibited at their house. It was quite elaborate and impressive. Afterwards, the Russos took all of us to the magnificent presepe at the church near their house at the end of Via Victorio Emanuele II. There were scenes from Bra at Christmas, and there were nativity scenes from Bethlehem. We were told that the whole production took 2 months to assemble. They’ve been doing it each year for 20 years! We all went back to our house afterwards for aperitivo. It was a delightful evening.

Thursday, January 3, 2012

With my camera broken, I didn’t get to document our travels to the mountain town we visited today. We had a great time riding the funiculare to the top of the town and having lunch at the trattoria there.

There was a gorgeous church nearby, and we all enjoyed visiting its extensive Christmas decorations.

Later in the day, Lisa and Enzo joined us for aperitivo that looked a lot like supper…Enzo made a special Chocolate Caprese Cake for the occasion.

We finished early, and left for Torino to spend the night at the Jet Hotel, across the highway from the airport, where Jim and Joan and I got our flight out Friday morning at 6:45.

Thanks for coming, Jim and Joan. And, thanks for driving us to the airport, Peter. I’ll miss you while I’m in San Francisco!

SANTUARIO DE CREA

Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2012

Peter and Jim got up early to take sunrise pictures. They were lovely…who could miss with the Italian Alps as your backdrop?

Later in the day, we took off for the Santuario de Crea, a lovely spot where many (maybe 18?) buildings have been built to memorialize the life of Christ. Each building has a theme of one moment in Christ’s life. When you put them all together, they tell His amazing, old, old story. We all had an incredibly moving time at this Santuario.

When we left there, we ended up in Cherasco at the wine shop next to the oldest chocolate shop around. The wine shop owner had agreed to house some of the most popular chocolate items while the chocolate owners took a vacation, so we found what we wanted in wine and chocolate at the same store. Can’t beat that!

What a lovely New Year’s Day with the Nixons!
