Back in Bra Celebrating a National Holiday

We took off for Bra from Trento midmorning and first went on a wild goose chase for some special wine from that region requested by our neighbor Enzo.

No, this enoteca doesn’t carry that wine. You can only get it at the vineyard.

Sign on the vineyard gate: VACANZA: 9-24 AOGOSTO!

So sorry, Enzo, maybe we will need to come back another time and get your special wine.

By then, Peter had to really go to get to our lunch reservation at La Boca in Zibello by 1pm. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Of course, we had to have culatello that is so famous from that region. We don’t ever like a chance to go by to stop there. You can’t buy culatello anywhere else.

On the way through the countryside, we came across a huge art museum. We were sorry that it was closed. It looked very interesting for such a small town.

See the picture of a trumpet with a red line through it? Does anybody know what that means? When Peter saw it, he started singing, “The Day the Music Died.” I thought it might be a warning not to make a lot of noise, like blowing your car horn. We’re waiting for the correct answer.

When we arrived in Bra, it seemed totally deserted. We guessed this was what Enzo meant by saying everybody’s gone on vacation.

It was very nice of Jess to invite us to supper. She had made  lasagna, and our cupboards were bare. Thanks, Jess.

Ciao, Colleen

Wednesday morning, we found ourselves out walking for an hour in the empty streets. It was a little bit eerie.

My broken wrist has kept me from running, but walking is great. I get hot, and it’s hard to get the cast cooled off, but it’s worth it. I am not a sedentary person.

Just as we got in from our walk, our nextdoor neighbor Lisa rang our doorbell to invite us to go with her and Enzo to her mom and dad’s barbecue at 12:30. We readily agreed and were pleased to find out that today was a national holiday. That was why no one was out. It was also our daughter Jill’s birthday, so I told Jill that all of Italy was taking the day off in her honor.

Lisa’s aunt and uncle were also there. We spoke Italian, ate wonderful barbecued chicken with yummy sides and desserts all day, splashed around in the pool (I took my garbage bag and rubber band.) some took naps, then we all ate some more delicious fare that Enzo made into veggie lasagna for supper. We went home very happy for having been invited into this wonderful family’s holiday celebration.

Thank you, Ella and Giovani!

Colleen

P.S. Aucoins, you need to know that Giovani is planning a trip to southern USA next year…including Georgia and Louisiana. Wouldn’t that be fantastic!?
