The malgas we visited today had Colleen access, and I was so glad I could go along.
Malga di Preghena was the smaller of the two, but the friendly goatherd made the visit worth it. We had great fun with those lovely new friends. There was also a teenaged boy that enjoyed an English conversation with Peter. I think they could have talked all afternoon.
Malga di Bordolona di Sotto had a parking lot full, which is our indication that the locals go there for a good meal. We did have a lovely meal, and the owner Gilly gave us a tour of the cheese-making facility. Her father was working on some of the new cheeses, and we enjoyed the way they both talked about loving to make cheese and being with the cows. Several of the cows wandered into the parking/cafĂ© area while we were there. Gilly chided the one who decided one of the cars was her salt lick like a mother would correct her child and shooed it back into the pasture. One loose cow stood in front of the prayer station for a long time. She gave us a long, friendly “you can join me if you want” look. Another one came up to get a drink from a spring-fed trough. I thought she would stay there all day with the cool water.
Gilly spent a long time with us while we were there. We have learned that the malga owners have this in common…they all love what they do and enjoy telling anyone who is interested in listening. Her story of living in a cheese-making family was inspiring and heartwarming.
Thanks for a lovely visit, Gilly.
